Grow the Greenroof: research spreads to BCIT

Posted in Uncategorized at 10:01 am by skijumper

I had a brief peruse of the Canada Green Building Council website this morning.  I was intially interested to determine the availability and cost of the

accredited professional certification program.  While searching I stumbled upon some interesting news articles including the one below which highlights the collaboration between BCIT and NSERC to increase innovation and encourage the propagation of green roof technology in the development sector.

Green roof technology research and development is on a growth trend in B.C. David L. Emerson, Minister of Industry, announced Oct. 15 federal funding of up to $600,000 over the next three years to support B.C. Institute of Technology’s Centre for the Advancement of Green Roof Technology. The funding is the first to be made available through the College and Community Innovation pilot program, a new initiative of Science and Engineering Research Canada (NSERC). BCIT will be seeking an additional $300,000 in required matching funds to support the centre’s planned activities. Green roofs are specialized roofing systems that support vegetation growth on rooftops. Green roofs can reduce storm water runoff, lower a building’s cooling/heating energy demand and extend the service life of a roof membrane. The long-term success of B.C.’s emerging green roof industry is dependent on bringing together researchers, product innovators, roofing manufacturers, landscape and architectural designers, green roof contractors, building owners and the development community.

I wonder how I could get involved?
